Rice Production in California

چکیده
Several reasons contributed to the low success of early trials, including varieties that were not adapted to the soils, climatic conditions and photoperiod of the region. Most of the trials were carried out in the Delta, where the night temperatures were too low for the varieties used. In additions, the Delta soils were very fertile, while the varieties tested were bred to produce an adequate yield on poor soils. Furthermore, careful water management was difficult with the irrigation and drainage systems available at that time .

Grower Practices for Blackbird Control in Wild Rice in California
We surveyed 29 wild rice growers, representing 96% of the California acreage grown in 1993, to determine current practices for blackbird damage control. Twenty-seven growers (93%) had blackbird damage. The period of greatest damage and most intensive control was July through September. Red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) most frequently caused damage, but three other species of blackbir...
متن کاملEconomic Impacts of Blackbird Damage to the Rice Industry
In cooperation with the Louisiana Rice Research Board, the Louisiana State University Rice Research Station and the USA Rice Federation, we conducted a questionnaire survey in 2002 to estimate the economic impacts of blackbirds on the rice industry in Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, California, and Missouri. Survey areas in rice producing states were identified based on the 2001 National Agricultur...
متن کاملForecasting Milled Rice Production in Ghana Using Box-Jenkins Approach
The increasing demand for rice in Ghana has been a major concern to the government and other stakeholders. Recent concerns by the coalition for African Rice Development (CARD) to double rice production within ten years in Sub-Saharan countries have triggered the to implement strategies to boost rice production in the government. To fulfill this requirement, there is a need to monitor and foreca...

The Nigerian rice sector has made remarkable improvement in the last decade as production has increased significantly thereby reducing the gap between domestic supply and demand. In the last three decades, rice imports make up greater proportion of Nigerian imports as rice forms a structural component of the Nigerian diet. Past government inconsistent policies were not successful in securing go...

Floating algal mats are a significant problem in California rice fields. Cyanobacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen and are thus considered beneficial in some rice production systems. California rice fields are planted from seeds not transplants, and rice seedlings are adversely impacted by floating algal mats. The algal mats cause two significant problems that lead to yield reduction: floating mat...
متن کاملEconomic and Environmental Impacts of Herbicide- Tolerant Transgenic Rice Adoption in California
This study used a static, partial budgeting approach to estimate the potential net benefits of the adoption of herbicide-tolerant transgenic rice in California. Scenarios were developed based on average cost figures across the state using actual pesticide use data and assuming a rice-only rotation, as well as a three-year field study of efficacy of herbicide regimes in the presence of herbicide...
